Hyperbolic orbit of the interstellar object labled C/2019 Q4. By definition, this sort of orbit means an object will travel through the solar system only once. Image via ESA. Read more.
Chinese media have reported that the Yutu-2 rover has discovered a “gel-like” substance in a crater on the far side of the moon. It sounds intriguing, but details are still scarce. Read more.
Gemini Observatory released this 2-color composite image of the 2nd interstellar object - C/2019 Q4 - on Friday afternoon. It looks comet-like doesn't it? Its hyperbolic orbit (see image at top of page), and its appearance, are why astronomers are calling it a comet. Astronomers used the Gemini North Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) from Hawaii’s Maunakea to obtain this image, which consists of 4 60-second exposures. Blue and red dashes are images of background stars which appear to streak due to the motion of the object. Image via Travis Rector/ Gemini Observatory/ NSF/ AURA.
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Kannan A captured this image last night. He said, “The Harvest Moon tonight in Singapore coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival by the Chinese. Despite the hazy and cloudy skies, the full moon appeared in the sky brightly illuminated and at almost 100% full.”
