The constellation Orion straddles the celestial equator, an imaginary line on the sky's dome, directly above Earth's equator. That's why, in some cultures, Orion's Belt is seen as a Celestial Bridge.

The westernmost star in the Belt, or Bridge, lies on the celestial equator, which intersects horizons all over the world at points due east and due west. So Mintaka can be used to find those cardinal directions in your sky.
