August guide to the bright planets

Jupiter and Saturn are easy to see in the evening. Dazzling Venus lights up the morning sky. Mercury sinks into the glare of sunset. Mars stays deeply buried in the glare of sunrise.

Tonight … Moon near star Antares

Antares is a bright, red star visible at this time of year. It was considered the Fire Star of the ancient Chinese.

Awesome beauty of the Eagle Nebula

The Eagle Nebula - aka Messier 16 or M16 - is home to several famous structures, including the Pillars of Creation and the Stellar Spire.

M17 is the Omega Nebula

Near M16 on the sky's dome is M17, or Messier 17 - aka the Omega Nebula - visible through binoculars and glorious in a low power telescope.

Sun halo with 2 contrail shadows

The sun is casting shadows of an aircraft contrail downwards onto thin cirrus haze layers below. Higher above, ice crystals in cirrus clouds have created a 22-degree halo around the sun. Photo taken July 29, 2017 by Jüri Voit in Estonia.
