EarthSky's meteor shower guide for 2017

All you need to know about 2017's major meteor showers. Moonlight will interfere with this year's Perseid shower on the mornings of August 12 and 13. Start watching for meteors this weekend, and watch through early August, while the moon is out of the way between midnight and dawn, and the Perseids are gearing up.

Watch for Delta Aquariid meteors

These meteors are the reason it's fun to begin watching in late July. The Delta Aquarid shower is long and rambling and overlaps with the Perseids.

Tonight … Find the Teapot, and the galaxy's center

The center of our Milky Way galaxy is located in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius with its famous Teapot asterism.

Where's the moon? Waning crescent

Amirul Syazani in Malaysia caught earthshine on this morning's waning crescent moon. Did you see it from the Americas? Not likely, especially as the line of moonrise, and sunrise, edge farther west today.

Curtis Beaird wrote, "Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds love these sunflowers. Mexican sunflower, Japanese sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) ... We had a field day with the six plants that managed to germinate and grow. Birds really like the seeds."
